Social Media Video & Feeds

The explosion in the number of digital video cameras has brought on similar growth in the amount of video that social media sites accept. Facebook accepts thousands of video uploads each day. Hospitals and health care organizations have found that YouTube, for instance, is an excellent destination for their video. Sherman Health and Resurrection Health Care pages are great examples. On YouTube, videos that would have remained unused enjoy a new life where hundreds of potential patients may view them. ICYOU (Intensive Content for Your Health) is available for hospital communicators who believe YouTube does not allow the type of control they covet.

Streaming Video, RSS Feeds

Ustream is becoming very popular. The website consists of a network of diverse channels providing a platform for live-casting and live video streaming of events online. Established in March 2007, the site has more than 2 million registered users who generate more than 1.5 million hours of live streamed content and more than 10 million unique hits per month. Ustream, like many sites, is free to join.

Ustream allows users to log in and broadcast from the website or from a mobile device using its mobile broadcasting application. Users can watch streams live on the website and on the Ustream iPhone, Android and Windows Phone 7 applications. The website allows users to interact, vote in polls, rate, chat and so on. The iPhone and Android applications allow users to watch and chat.

RSS – Real Simple Syndication – is a method of transmitting information from a website to those who are interested in keeping apprised of an organization’s information. Providing RSS feeds to website visitors keeps them up-to-date on the latest information without requiring them to constantly visit the website.

To subscribe to a website’s RSS feed, users merely need to set up an RSS Reader, which can be done easily on Google and several other websites. Using an RSS Reader and subscribing to feeds from media outlets, blogs and other websites keeps people informed and creates a customized virtual news service accessible daily. Visitors subscribe by clicking on the RSS icon on the website or entering the site’s address in the RSS Reader. When the RSS Reader application or website is opened, updates will appear in boxes with links to the stories or posts.
