Metropolitan Chicago area hospitals care for both the physical and fiscal health of the communities they serve. Health care is the number one employer in the region. Hospitals are generally the largest employer in the communities they serve.

Hospitals in the metropolitan Chicago region:

• Directly and secondarily support over 407,000 jobs.
• Generate over $12 billion in payroll (salary and benefits).
• Generate over $340 million in sales tax alone.
• Generate high-paying and sustainable employment opportunities —with an average salary and benefits package of $80,206.

It is anticipated that hospitals will generate 37,687 additional jobs to the metropolitan Chicago area economy by 2020. This would amount to 3,769 new jobs annually.
